Former Virginia Commonwealth University dental professor convicted of embezzling more than $100,000

A retired Virginia Commonwealth University dental professor almost got away with stealing more than $100,000 from the VCU Dental Faculty Practice Association, authorities said.

But James E. Hardigan was undone by a measly 63 cents that was left in an account from which he had taken a large sum of money, according to Richmond prosecutor John Jung.

Babysitter in Richmond, Virginia sentenced to maximum time for killing 2-year-old girl

The 2-year-old girl had a bad rash and kept crying for her mother, who was out of town.

The babysitter, Gabriela Gonzales, apparently could not stand it anymore. Richmond prosecutor Edward Nickel said that Gonzales shook the girl so hard that her “neck had to be snapping back and forth” and also smashed the girl’s head several times onto a bathtub or toilet.

She died three days later.

On Thursday, Judge Margaret P. Spencer of Richmond Circuit Court sentenced Gonzales, whom prosecutors said has shown no remorse, to 20 years in prison — the maximum sentence possible — for the death of Keiry Nicole Dominguez Martinez. Read More, Click Here

Virginia Governor McDonnell has lowest approval rating in two years

Gov. Bob McDonnell's job approval rating has dipped slightly, according to a poll released this morning amid increased scrutiny of the governor's relationship with a major campaign donor -- an issue that more polled view as "just politics" than a "major issue."

McDonnell's approval rating in the new Quinnipiac University poll dipped to 49 percent, the lowest its been since October 2011, when he posted a 62 percent approval rating, and the first time it dipped below 50 percent in that survey.

That said, another recent poll showed McDonnell’s popularity continuing, with a 61 percent job approval rating among registered voters. The NBC/Marist poll surveyed 1,095 registered voters between April 28-May 2. Read More, Click Here
